Employee Spotlight
Sherry Hecker
by Greg Crego
Sherry running wild through Harriet Hollister Spencer ParkSherry has been with us for close to 3 years, and serves a dual role for the store.  While she puts some time in on the floor, her main focus is as an ambassador, representing us at health fairs, out of store events, and she runs our training programs for the Medved Lilac 5k/10k and the Medved 10 Ugly Men 5k.  Outside of the store, Sherry also is a Yoga teacher, a part-time student and she is a member of GVH.  She coaches at the Easter Regional Elite Distance Running Camp at Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid.  She has also been known to run with the Brighton cross country teams and snowshoe club.  She is the proud mom of David (15) and Daniel (12).

Sherry started her running passion with her Dad at age 12 and continued to run through high school (Canandaigua Academy) and college (University of Rochester).  She is a trail runner at heart, but has been wildly successful in the marathon, dramatically dropping her times since her debut at the distance in New York in 2006.  In 2008, she qualified for Boston at the Niagara Falls Marathon and ran Boston in 2009.  She then PR'd in Philly this past November in a blistering 3:36.  On trails, Sherry cites Dances With Dirt, The Muddy Sneaker and Dam Good Trail Run as her favorite races; "The more single track the better."  Despite all of the trails she runs, there's a rumor she is deathly afraid of snakes and is not afraid to show that fear if one is spotted.

Her real running passion is snowshoeing and often says she runs in the summer so that she is in shape to snowshoe.  She has run the Frozen Assets snowshoe race in Harriet Hollister Spencer Park since 2003 and has become a family tradition with her Dad and sister Janelle.  She even got her son David to do it in 2009 and 2010.  Sherry has qualified for and run the snowshoe national championships in 2008 in Utah and 2009 in Oregon, medaling in her age group in 2009.

Other Fun Facts About Sherry:
Favorite Races:  Goose Adventure Racing's lineup (I'm sure she's not sucking up to her manager, Mort)
Favorite Snowshoe:  Direct Mounted Dions
Favorite Food/Beverage:  Trail Mix, Pizza, Lattes (Decaf, Trust us, Sherry doesn't need the caffeine)

Need some assistance in training for this year's event.  We will once again be holding a 10K and a 5K Medved Lilac Training Program to help get you ready.  Details on the Training Program will be posted soon.  The Medved Lilac Training Program will be led by Sherry Hecker (see bio above).
Asics at Medved
Tempo Run Collection

by Greg Crego

Asics Men's Gel Hyper SpeedIt's hard to believe, but the racing season is almost upon us.  Over the next few newsletters, we'd like to highlight some offerings on the lighter side.  Let's start with the Asics Tempo Run Collection, an assortment of lightweight trainers and racers designed with those runners looking to train and/or race fast in mind.  The Gel Speedstar, Gel DS Trainer, Gel Hyper Speed and Gel DS Racer are four shoes in this collection you can find at Medved
 Asics Women's Gel DS Trainer
In the lightweight trainer category, there's the Gel Speedstar and the Gel DS Trainer (Women's pictured right).  The Speedstar is a neutral cushion shoe, meaning it is designed for the runner with a neutral to high arch that does not need any additional pronation control.  For the runner looking for more support, but still in a lightweight shoe, the DS Trainer may be for you.

If you're looking for that edge in a race or in your track workouts, the shoes in the racing category may suit your needs.  The Gel Hyper Speed (Men's pictured above left) is billed as Asics' most versatile racer, designed with an outsole that provides a lightweight platform and exception road feel.  The Gel DS Racer is back after a 3 year hiatus to provide those that need a little more support but still want a true flat on race day.

Lunar Shoes

by Greg Crego
Women's LunarElite+As running shoes evolve, models continue to be updated with lighter, more durable and with increasingly more technical materials.  Nike always seems to be at the forefront of innovation. Over the last few seasons, you may have noticed the introduction of their Lunar foams and fly wire upper materials incorporated in the Lunaracer +.  That technology expanded into the LunarGlide last year, and now we have updates to the Lunaracer (+2) and the LunarGlide and the introduction of the LunarElite+.  All of these shoes offer some level of dynamic support in the lunar foam allowing the shoes to be worn by under - moderate overpronators that still are looking for a light flexible ride.

The LunarElite+ (Women's pictured above) is designed as a lightweight tempo trainer for under to moderate overpronators.  The Lunar Midsole in this model is designed to be responsive with increased energy return.  The wedged carrier construction in the midsole offers runner specific dynamic support, i.e. the more support you need, the more you get out of the midsole.  This model that replaces the Zoom Elite series weighs in at 9.7 oz.Nike Men's LunarGlide+

We are pleased to bring in, for a limited time and size run, the Livestrong Edition of the LunarGlide+ in both men's and women's sizes (Men's pictured right).  This shoe is a daily distance trainer combining lightweight performance, top-tier cushioning and as-needed support.  The dynamic support of the midsole is constantly adapting to the runner's stride delivering the right amount of support.  The LunarGlide+ also offers gender specific features for an outstanding fit.  It weighs in at 10.6 oz.
Nike Lunaracer+2
For those racers out there, the update to Lunaracer (+2)(Pictured left) is sure to please.  Again, the lunar foam in this shoe is designed in such a way that it is appropriate for neutral to mild overpronators.  The no-sew upper, track spike inspired tongue as well as a sockliner that molds to your foot, ensure a comfortable race whether at 5k or the marathon.  6.9oz.

Attack those icy trails
by Mort Nace
Kahtoola Microspikes

What happened to winter??

The trails remain frozen but really don't require snowshoes, just traction to stay upright. I swear by Kahtoola's Microspikes as the best option for these offroad winter runs. They are easily removable - but stay secure, durable and carry a big bite. Run or hike, and not worry about taking a spill.
